Chile and Peru held a new meeting of the Joint Boundary Demarcation Commission in Lima. The purpose of the meeting was to coordinate the installation of new boundary landmarks at the Chacalluta sector, which connects the cities of Arica and Tacna.<\/h2><\/div><\/div>[vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

A Joint Subcommittee of Delegates met in Lima, Peru, on August 7 and 8, 2025, to comply with the agreements reached in the Work Plan of the Second Extraordinary Meeting of the Chile-Peru Permanent Joint Boundary Commission.<\/p>\n

\nRepresenting the Chilean Delegation were the President of the Chilean Boundary Commission and Director of Boundaries of the National Directorate of Borders and Limits, Lawyer Samy Hawa Arellano, the Delegate, Juan Pablo Benavides Monsalve, and the Secretary of the Chilean Boundary Commission, Marta Mateluna R\u00edos. Also present were First Secretary Nicol\u00e1s Franjola Lara and DIFROL Attach\u00e9 Sonia Estrada Barra, both from the Chilean Embassy in Peru.<\/p>\n

\nRepresenting the Peruvian Delegation were the Director of Limits of the General Directorate of Sovereignty, Limits and Antarctic Affairs of Peru, Minister Mr. Gustavo Figueroa Navarro, the delegates Mr. Jos\u00e9 Francisco Gianella Herrera and Mr. Ciro Sierra Farf\u00e1n, as well as the officials of the Limits Directorate, Second Secretary Mr. Antonio Chang Huayanca, Mr. Gaudens G\u00f3zar Manyari, Mr. Percy Herrera Vargas and Mrs. Silvia Herrera Casta\u00f1eda.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this meeting was to evaluate the possibility of densifying the markers between markers 10 and 11, as provided in the Minutes of the aforementioned Second Extraordinary Meeting.<\/p>\n

\nThe Joint Subcommittee of Delegates agreed on the technical need to carry out this densification in order to facilitate and enhance the visibility of the boundary layout on the ground. To this end, it proposed a working methodology that would meet the criteria of visibility, geodetic accuracy, and accessibility in accordance with the Regulations and Complementary Technical Standards. This proposed methodology will be submitted for approval at the next Ordinary Meeting and its implementation is estimated for the field work planned for March 2026.<\/p>\n

\nFinally, the Presidents of both Delegations expressed their satisfaction with the achievements of this meeting, which allow for the continuation of the demarcation of the international boundary between Chile and Peru.<\/p>\n
