Launch of the Official Website of the National Advisory Committee on Uniform Geographical Measurements
The new platform will allow the public to access official information on distances, areas, elevations, and volumes within the continental, insular, maritime, Antarctic, and aerial domains of the national territory. This portal represents a joint effort by the National Directorate of Borders and Boundaries of the State (DIFROL), the Military Geographic Institute (IGM), the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA), and the Photogrammetric Service of the Chilean Air Force (SAF).
The CAMGU, created by Supreme Decree No. 157 of 2024 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and published in the Official Gazette on December 10, 2024, has the mission of standardizing, validating, and officially disseminating the geographical measurements of the national territory. This responds to the strategic need for reliable, uniform, and authorized data that strengthen territorial management, the defense of sovereignty, diplomacy, and State transparency.
During the presentation, the authorities of the participating institutions highlighted the importance of collaborative work:
-
The Director of Borders at DIFROL, Samy Hawa Arellano, stated that this effort reflects the State’s commitment to facilitating access to public information, providing official geographical data both in Chile and to the international community.
-
The Director of the IGM, Colonel Pedro Castillo Figueroa, emphasized the relevance of the Chilean Army, through this technical body, making official data available to the public.
-
The Director of SHOA, Navy Captain Carlos Zúñiga Araya, stressed that having precise measurements is essential for maritime safety, monitoring, and the protection of ocean spaces.
-
The Director of SAF, Group Commander (A) Cristián Jiménez Chávez, highlighted that having a common base of geographical measurements is indispensable for air navigation, and also reflects inter-institutional coordination for the benefit of the country.
The creation of CAMGU represents the realization of a longstanding national aspiration. Throughout history, at least four previous attempts were made to establish a similar body: in the 1940s, the University of Chile, through the Institute of Earth Sciences, proposed the creation of a committee for official geographical measurements; in the 1960s, the Ministry of Public Works, through its Department of National Assets, revived the idea; toward the end of the 20th century, new proposals emerged to advance in an institutional framework to unify criteria; and in the early 21st century, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with 16 public agencies, promoted a project to establish a national committee on geographical measurements.
Today, after decades of effort, this objective has been achieved, and the launch of the portal www.medidasterritoriales.cl marks a decisive step toward bringing citizens official and up-to-date information on the country’s dimensions, consolidating a project of inter-institutional cooperation in the service of Chile.
